M5 English Lesson - Lesson from Becky Calder (professional)

Through January M5 will be raising money for the Community Support field trip, on which we organise a camp, raise money and take a blind school on the camp. This has become a sucessful part of the high school outdoor curriculum. As part of this, and linking to the school curriculum, the students are learning persuasive writing. In this they had to write a charity appeal letter, which will be used in their fund-raising. We were fortunate enough this year to be visited by Becky Calder who works for a charity in the UK and has extensive experience writing appeal letters. Her work is used on the BBC radio in the UK and she has been asked to run training for other charities in the UK. Becky is the Head of Individual Giving for the charity 'Toybox' (https://www.toybox.org.uk/) which works raising money to help street children in South America. In the last 12 years she has worked for OXFAM, New Zealand and the Stroke Association, UK. Becky came in to talk to the students of M5 on the techniques that can be used in charity appeal writing and how to make the letters as effective as possible. She handed out examples of her work and explained how to use different language devices and techniques to enhance the students letters. We were very lucky this year, as Becky was travelling in Thailand at the time. In the past years we have used the google hangouts as a tool for this lesson.

M4 students Field Trip in Khao Yai National Park

Nov 25-27 2016.
To supplement and support the M4 students’ in-class curriculum studies the students in M4 took part in a cross-curricular educational field trip to Khao Yai National Park, Pak Chong, Nakorn Ratchasima. The trip is organized in conjunction with Big Outdoors Education Centre which is professionally run by outdoor education specialists.
The fieldwork includes geography and science field study, which is a vital part of education, while English and Math are used extensively in the data handling and presentation.
The field work included studying the ecology and biodiversity of rivers, including;
·         Measuring and recording river speed of flow and river channel cross sections. Identifying and explaining the formation of river features. Field sketching and annotations.
·         Measuring tree height in the rainforest and determining carbon biomass of trees.
·         Pollution assessment and stream invertebrate surveys to determine the impact of human activities on our environment.  Further study of local industries and its impact on the environment.
·         Studying the vegetation variation and biodiversity along an environmental gradient and identify the adaptations of vegetation in a tropical Forest.
·         Undertaking a tourism impact survey of sites around the area. This specifically includes identifying human impact and surveying a tourist site to obtain primary data.
This was a fantastic trip and enjoyed by everyone. Not only did the students have a great time, working in groups, they learned a great deal about the natural environment in Thailand. The weekend finished with a Tourist survey at the Palio, which enabled all the students to indulge in ice cream and photos.

The Solar System M3 Science Project

The M3 students have been learning about The Solar System in Science classes with Kru Johan. The students were divided into groups, and each group had to make a model of their assigned planet/Sun. They also had to find the most important facts about the planet and attach it to their model. Groups had to collaborate with each other in order to create models with the correct relative sizes. On the day the projects were due, the students had to arrange their models in the correct order in the school's courtyard. The students really enjoyed this and did an excellent job. This project allowed students to get a good visual representation of The Solar System and compare some of the most important facts. By: Kru Johan Pieterse
